General questions:
-
In May 2026, Climb Nittany’s previous parent operator, 5.Life, announced the gym’s closure, largely due to unsustainable historical building occupancy costs. Recognizing how essential this space is to our region, a local community effort (Save Climb Nittany) rapidly formed to secure funding, acquire both the business operations and the building, and transition Climb Nittany to dedicated local ownership.
-
The best way to help right now is to spread the word, plan to resume your membership (or consider Keystone membership!) as soon as possible, and stay engaged with community updates!
-
Fall 2026, ASAP. We are working diligently on the behind-the-scenes legal, financial, and facility transitions. We will announce an official reopening date on our social media channels and email newsletter as soon as our setup timeline is locked in.
-
Climb Nittany's next chapter is being built on a strong foundation with a renewed focus on long-term sustainability, local leadership, and community. Climb Nittany will now be owned and operated by a group of local stewards who are deeply invested in both Central Pennsylvania and the climbing community. By restructuring major operating expenses, including purchasing the building to significantly reduce occupancy costs, the new ownership team is creating a more sustainable financial model that allows resources to be invested where they matter most—our members, staff, programs, and facility. Combined with a commitment to operational excellence, meaningful community partnerships, and the experience of business leaders, climbers, and outdoor enthusiasts, the goal is simple: to build a locally owned climbing gym that will thrive for years to come.
-
Multiple tiers of membership and Keystone membership offerings will be available ASAP. We are rapidly preparing our payment processors to support this.
Business Questions:
-
Climb Nittany is owned and operated by local community members and climbing enthusiasts who stepped up to preserve the gym, Happy Valley Partners in Climb.
-
They are one and the same! While real estate and business operations are often separated, we determined during business development that the single best path for long-term sustainability was to combine everything under one unified local organization. By owning both the physical building and operating the gym under one roof, we eliminate intermediate leasing markup, streamline management, and ensure Climb Nittany remains financially healthy and anchored to serve Centre County for decades to come.
-
Climb Nittany is legally structured as a Pennsylvania Benefit LLC. Under Pennsylvania law, a Benefit LLC is a specialized business entity that explicitly binds us to a dual bottom line: generating economic sustainability while legally requiring us to deliver a tangible, positive public benefit to our local community.
-
A for-profit Benefit LLC structure allows us to move swiftly, access traditional commercial financing, and maintain long-term financial agility, while legally binding our business decisions to our community-first mission rather than pure profit maximization.
-
Not officially yet, but we are built on those exact principles! To clear up a common point of confusion, there is a difference between being a legal Benefit LLC and a certified B Corp. A Benefit LLC is our official legal status under Pennsylvania law, which requires us to hold ourselves accountable by evaluating and publicly publishing our impact against an independent, published third-party standard each year. We chose the B Impact Assessment, the framework created by B Lab (the organization behind B Corp certification), as our chosen evaluation standard. We are actively holding our operations to the high bars set by that framework, and as our business matures, achieving official third-party B Corp certification is something we hope to pursue down the road.
-
Our mission is simple:
Building community through movement.
Expanding awareness of and access to the benefits of climbing.
Promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Practically speaking, building community through movement means Climb Nittany is much more than a gym with plastic holds, it’s a third space for Centre County. We bring this to life by hosting inclusive local events, open community roundtables, and creating space where climbers of every background, age, and skill level feel genuinely welcome to connect both on and off the wall.
Expanding awareness of and access to climbing means taking intentional steps to remove traditional barriers to the sport. We will put this into practice through youth developmental programming, local school and non-profit partnerships, and accessible intro-to-climbing clinics aimed at reaching folks who might otherwise never have tried climbing.
Finally, promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship honors the natural outdoor spaces we all share across Central Pennsylvania. We will hold ourselves to this standard by minimizing our facility’s environmental footprint, organizing local crag cleanup days, and partnering with outdoor conservation organizations to educate our community on responsible Leave No Trace ethics when climbing outdoors.
-
We will publish an annual Public Benefit Report highlighting key impact metrics. Potential metrics include youth programs, community event hosting, local partnership initiatives, and facility accessibility.
-
At this time, our initial capitalization and acquisition funding rounds are complete. While direct equity investment is closed, there will be opportunities in the future for community sponsorships and non-profit partner initiatives. If investment opportunities become available, the community will be the first to know well in advance of need.
-
Due to tight legal timelines, the initial fundraising push required working within rapid, pre-existing commitments to secure the property before it was lost to outside commercial buyers.
Operating questions:
-
Our primary goal is to bring back indoor climbing to Central PA and foster community through movement. We are immediately focusing on quality routesetting, strong youth programs, inclusive community events, and a well-maintained facility.
-
We LOVE the team that made Climb Nittany special. We are actively working with former staff members to bring as many original team members back as possible to maintain continuity and familiar faces.
-
Day-to-day operations are led directly on-site by our Executive Director alongside our experienced local gym management team. Our Executive Director oversees overall gym operations, staff development, community programming, and member experience, ensuring that our daily focus remains aligned with our mission to build a welcoming, inclusive space for Centre County climbers.
-
Absolutely. We will hold regular feedback surveys, member forums, and town halls to ensure our schedules, setting styles, and events directly reflect what our members want.
-
We are actively exploring this. We recognize auto-belays as a priority so solo climbers, parents with kids, and beginners have immediate access to top-rope climbing.
Community:
-
Yes. Community input is central to why and how the gym was saved. Through a dedicated advisory panel and regular feedback channels, member voices will directly influence programming and facility priorities.
-
The Save Climb Nittany community’s NPO group continues to explore the option of creating a Booster Club organization to support and expand access to Team Nittany, the youth climbing team.
The Jana Marie Foundation is also going to launch an exciting new program, Elevate, in partnership with Climb Nittany. The program will be offered free of charge to kids in Centre County and aims to use climbing, outdoor adventure, team building, and reflection to help young people develop the emotional, social, and leadership skills needed to thrive. -
No. The operating gym will remain a public benefit-focused business to ensure long-term commercial viability and operational efficiency, while partnering with a supporting non-profit programming.
-
Yes, absolutely! We are actively structuring a formal volunteer program designed to let passionate community members get involved with events, youth programs, and facility projects, as well as serving the local community. We want community partnerships to be a sustainable, core feature of how the gym serves Centre County, which is why we are exploring building out a structured perks and benefits system.
